Mother of Chet Duong Daravuth, killed on Sunday Easter
30 March 1997 during a demonstration organized by the workers to
protest against the corruption of the Courts. Unlike previous
demonstrations directed by President Sam Rainsy, the
demonstration of March 30 1997 had been lawfully authorized by
the Ministry of Interior. Hardly five minutes after the arrival
of the procession in front of the National assembly, four
grenades were thrown in the group of 300 demonstrators, mostly
young factory workers, killing at least 16 persons and injuring
200 persons. An FBI investigation, launched because an American
observer had been injured, points to the body guard's unit of
Prime Minister Hun Sen as to have organized the attempt, on the
order or at least with the blessing of the Prime Minister
himself. Aside from the FBI investigation, to this day, the
Cambodian police has never questioned any witness, nor released a
report on the results of any investigation. Because of the death
of her son, Ly Neary decided to leave the work at the hospital
and to fully commit in politics: "I want to continue the
work of my son". She will run in the commune elections of
February 2002 as candidate for the commune Tuol Svay Prey 2 of
Phnom Penh.
