BAN ON GLOBAL WITNESS INDEFENSIBLE

Opposition parliamentarians insist Cambodia be re-opened for Global Witness work unless the government has something to hide. What Global Witness has been doing is absolutely crucial for a sustainable development of national resources in Cambodia, and perfectly complementary to the official monitor.

The government’s latest action to ban Global Witness officials from entering Cambodia will not contribute to good governance it often claims to uphold. It should be mature and courageous enough to handle critical reports, if any, on its management of the resources. After all, it was only last month that the government established a special group to respond to this kind of criticism.
The group has yet to address vital issues raised in various Global Witness reports. Closing off the country to any organisation of Global Witness caliber is not an acceptable response option.

The Opposition parliamentarians join the international community that cares about Cambodia in supporting commendable work by the Global Witness team and its role in halting the fast depletion of the Cambodian natural resources.
