SAOM THOM COMMUNE, Rattanakiri Province

The province of Rattanakiri, located in the northeast of the country, is bordering both Lao and Vietnam. Along with the southeast province of Mondulkiri, it is the most remote and preserved part of Cambodia. Rattanakiri is inhabited by ethnic minority groups (known as Khmer Loeu) such as Tumpun, Kreung, Kra Chok, Brao, and Jarai.  The population of Khmer Loeu in Cambodia is estimated around 60,000 to 70,000. These tribes are still living under their own ways and customs. Different languages, different religions and religious cults and different cultures keep them off the Khmer society.
Saom Thom Commune is located 15 km from the Vietnamese border and 714 km from Phnom Penh. The commune gathers 4 villages, on a 60 km2-surface. It is made of Jarai ethnic minority.

The Jarai tribe of Saom Thom lives on agricultural resources: paddy fields, tobacco, tapioca and vegetable plantations, cashew nut trees harvesting. The women carry their yield in handmade "backpacks" (see picture above) and walk to the nearest town, where they sell it for few income.

Implemented projects
As most communes in Cambodia, Saom Thom has no electricty or clean water. Dirty water is responsible for many diseases and the population of Saom Thom has no access to any kind of health infrastructure or medicine. 8 wells were implemeted in May and June 2002. 8 more are being implemented in April 2003.
