POIPET,  Bantey Manchey Province

Poipet, Bantey Manchey Province is one of the two border checkpoint between Cambodia and Thailand. It is located at 450km NW of Phnom Penh on RN5 (12 hours of drive on very bad road), and 3 hours away by car from Battambang and Siem Reap airports on National Road 6.  it is currently Cambodia’s largest commune, with a population of nearly 100 000 people. Most of its inhabitants migrated from other provinces, attracted by the border-location. People earn a cheap living working in Thailand, spending a 23 cents daily-fee at the border to get only 1.15 $ working as vendors or porters in Aranyaprathet. Misery and poverty neighbour the luxury of nearby casinos where crooked rich people come to launder money, deal drugs and encourage prostitution.
