KILOMETRE 6
Commune of km6, Russey Keo District, is located along the
NR5, which borders the Tonle Sap. Km6 is only 20 mn away from the center of
Phnom Penh, on the outskirts of the capital city. The 3 villages of the commune
spread on over 31 000 square meters, gathering more than 16 000 residents.
Km6 is a recently created commune. It is the consequence of both deforestation
and Phnom Penh’s scattering. Its residents hastily live upon agriculture (rice
and vegetable, rainy season), moto-taxi driving, selling food in the street or
at the market, or working in the nearby factories.
Since May 2002, Km6 benefits from a Twin-Sister Agreement with the French
commune of Bussy-Saint-Georges (Link). The combined efforts of the SRP
and of the French community should give this young commune the opportunity to
develop itself.
