BOEUNG TUMPUN |
Boeung Tumpun Commune, Manchey District, spreads on the South
East of Phnom Penh. It gathers about 30 000 residents (50% of whom are under 18)
on a 50 000 hectares land divided into 5 neighborhoods, along National Road #
271.
The commune was recently created, as a consequence of the
spreading of the capital city. 60% of the residents work for public companies in
Phnom Penh. The rest of them are fruit or vegetable vendors, craftsmen, moto-taxi
drivers... Apart from market-garden production, many craftshops are to be found
in Boeung Tumpun: brick factory, aluminum work, house painting, local
handicraft…
Boeung Tumpun cannot take full advantage of its nearby
location from Phnom Penh because of its lack of basic infrastructures. The roads
are very bad, waters are polluted, there is no sewage system, no public health
centre, and only 3 schools for the 18 000 children.

Projects in
need of fund raising |
 |
|
- Sewage system to be rehabilitated,
in order to improve health conditions and lower
pollution. The fist part of this big task got under way
in July and August 2002. The
drainage system was rebuilt in 5 of the commune’s streets. |

|
|
 |
|
- Road works : Currently very dusty in the dry season, they
get impossible to cross during the rainy season, when floods worsen the
holes and bumps. The rehabilitation of the roads would represent a
remarkable improvement of the residents’ living conditions. |
